“Woolf’s flexible, world-class program let me study data science without pausing my career. Through hands-on projects like building a credit scoring model, I gained confidence, clarity, and momentum to grow professionally.”
My Journey with Woolf: Building a Future in Data Science Without Hitting Pause
I’m Edward Chisoro, originally from Zimbabwe and currently based in Johannesburg, South Africa. A while ago, I found myself at a crossroads. I was working full-time in higher education, but I knew I wanted to deepen my skills and move into the world of data science. What I didn’t want was to put my life or career on hold.
That’s when I discovered Woolf and found the perfect program to match my goals. I enrolled in a Postgraduate Diploma in Data Science through the Data Science Institute, one of Woolf’s member colleges. What struck me right away was the balance: the program was rigorous and world-class, yet incredibly flexible. It respected my time, my ambitions, and the reality of working full-time. This wasn’t just an academic experience. It was transformational.
What I appreciated most was how practical and personal the learning felt. I wasn’t memorizing theories for exams. I was applying knowledge to real-world problems. One of the highlights of my time at Woolf was my capstone project, where I built a credit scoring model using logistic regression, random forests, and principal component analysis (PCA). I then developed a web application to predict customer default probabilities. That project brought everything together and now lives proudly in my professional portfolio.
Today, I’m working as a Teaching and Learning Coordinator at a university, while also contributing to data-driven projects in education, finance, and social impact. My time at Woolf gave me more than a qualification. It gave me confidence, clarity, and momentum.
If you’re thinking about studying while working, or you simply need an education model that fits your life, Woolf is proof that you can grow without hitting pause.
I’m so grateful I took that step, and I’m excited for the next one: pursuing a Master’s in Data Science.
