Jonathan Duquette

I am a scholar of South Asian religions whose work concentrates primarily on the history of late medieval and early modern Sanskrit intellectual traditions in India. After completing my Ph.D. in Religious Studies at the University of Montreal (2011), I was a postdoctoral researcher in Hamburg (2012-13), Leiden (2013-14), Kyoto (2014-15) and Oxford (2015-2019), where I researched - first as a Newton International Fellow and then as a Marie-Curie Fellow - on the history of Úivādvaita Vedānta, a poorly understood tradition of philosophical theology that rose to prominence in early modern South India. I am currently Research Fellow at Wolfson College, University of Oxford, and an Affiliated Lecturer in Sanskrit at the University of Cambridge. Trained initially as a physicist, I also nourish an interest for the dialogue between natural sciences and religions as well as for recent developments in philosophy of science and comparative philosophy. I have published articles in Religions of South Asia, Journal of Indological Studies, Numen, Philosophy East and West and the Journal of Indian Philosophy, of which I am currently the Assistant Editor.

Eleftheria K Pissadaki

Dr Eleftheria K Pissadaki studied Mathematics at the University of Crete, Greece. She then enrolled in the MSc program of Neuroscience (Faculty of Medicine) followed by a PhD at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) at the Foundation for Research and Technology, Hellas (FORTH) jointly with the Department of Biology, University of Crete, Greece. Eleftheria focused her studies on the computational and encoding power of the pyramidal cells of the hippocampus, and their role in the faculties of learning and memory.

ï»ż

After completing her PhD, she spent a short period as a postdoctoral fellow at the IMBB, while after she joined the Medical Research Council (MRC) Anatomical Neuropharmacology Unit, now known as MRC Brain Network Dynamics Unit, University of Oxford, UK, as a visiting scientist. Later, she was appointed as an MRC Investigator Scientist after being awarded a Parkinson's UK grant and later the MRC Centenary Early Career Award. Since then, the direction of her research is focused on the etiopathology of Parkinson's disease manifested by the loss of the substantia nigra pars compacta dopamine neurons but also on human and clinical studies related to neurodegenerative diseases.

ï»ż

Eleftheria implemented for the first time a detailed biophysical model of the dopamine neurons, the neurons that are particularly vulnerable in Parkinson’s disease, emphasizing their axon arbourisation, to test hypotheses related to the cause of their neurodegeneration. The predictions of her approaches have recently been confirmed by a number of high caliber experimental studies. Eleftheria continued her research in Parkinson's by joining the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Centre in New York, USA as a research scientist to contribute to a partnership project between Pfizer and IBM, aiming to use technology-based objective measures to passively monitor Parkinson’s disease signs, their fluctuation and their progression. Initially, Eleftheria led and co-designed the human experimental studies and protocols and executed the observational research studies of the project. She then focused her interests on the macroscopical symptoms of the disease manifested by the phenotypic characterization of individuals with Parkinson’s while she delivering simpler tools to remotely assess drug efficacy during clinical trials. Another active strand of her research is related to brain-based cognitive computing paradigms.

ï»ż

Eleftheria is applying her prior research results from the field of hippocampal anatomy and dynamics, neural code and the hippocampal microcircuit to derive novel cognitive and interpretable architectures of artificial intelligence and harware. She has contributed in the IBM Science for Social Good programme for delivering a blockchain application for exchanging scientific results in malaria within multiple distributed organizations. The output of this project is three patents and several submissions to international conferences. Currently, Eleftheria is researcher and manager at the Digital Quantitative Medicine (DQM) Department at Biogen, Cambridge, USA. While she has dealt with basic research on brain related functions and diseases, she has developed strong skills in brain circuitry, biophysics, compartmental modelling, complex data analysis and unsupervised predictive methods, statistics, design of human experimental research studies, data-based development of biokinetic models and blockchain applications.
